Empowering Future Leaders Through the Youth Police Academy
In the heart of Castle Rock, Colorado, a transformative program called the Youth Police Academy (YPA) is helping to shape the future leaders of our community. Launched in 2021 by the Castle Rock Police Department, the YPA offers middle and high school students an enriching educational experience focused on law enforcement and leadership development.
With guidance from school resource officers, participants engage in interactive sessions that highlight the daily challenges faced by law enforcement while addressing youth-oriented issues. Through teamwork and collaborative problem-solving, students hone their leadership skills and learn valuable tools that extend beyond the classroom.
Sessions Offered for Aspiring Leaders
The YPA program is not only limited to new participants. Students who have completed the program are encouraged to apply for the Leadership Track, where they can enhance their knowledge and assist new students in their development. This unique opportunity empowers returning students to contribute positively to their peers and instills a sense of community service.
For those interested in participating, the Castle Rock Police Department is offering two sessions in 2025:
- June 9 to 13: Daily sessions from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- July 28 to August 1: Daily sessions from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each session is free, though spaces are limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested students aged 13 to 17 who reside in Castle Rock and its surrounding areas can apply online.
Gaining Real-Life Insights
The curriculum extends well beyond traditional learning methods. Students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities such as:
- Traffic safety education focused on drunken driving and distracted-driving awareness.
- Criminal and crime scene investigations that provide a glimpse into law enforcement processes.
- Accident investigation presentations that include drone demonstrations.
- Interactive simulator training for police scenario situations.
- Demonstrations from regional SWAT teams and K9 units.
